Craig Reptile: Your Sunday Sonic Sundowner writesDon’t Miss “First Time: First Crime” at Up Comedy Club on April 17th!

CHIRP celebrates the Third Anniversary of the spoken word and music series First Time with First Time:  First Crime on Wednesday, April 17th at a new location, UP Comedy Club, part of Second City.

This special edition will feature Kelly Hogan, JC Brooks, Dmitry Samarov, Joe O'Sullivan, William Shunn, Melissa Pierce and CHIRP Radio's own Tony Breed.

The First Time Series is a unique hybrid of the best of both worlds.  Writers read their original writing and are followed by The First Time Three (Steve Frisbie, Liam Davis and Gerald Dowd ) performing a song selected by the writer in a stripped-down setting.  Previous musical selections have included songs by the Misfits, Nas, Sinead O'Connor, Huey Lewis and the News, Prince, Van Morrison and countless other artists spanning all eras and genres.

Tickets are only $10 each and all proceeds benefit the Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP).  Tickets can be ordered online in advance AT NO ADDITIONAL COST at www.upcomedyclub.com.

The show is all ages with doors opening at 7 pm and showtime at 8 pm. UP Comedy Club is located on the 3rd floor of 230 W. North Avenue, Chicago. DO NOT MISS THIS VERY SPECIAL EVENT! For more information, visit http://chirpradio.org/events or www.upcomedyclub.com.

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Sarah Cracknell Edition

Sarah Cracknell exudes class and elegance, in a low key manner. Moreover, she is seemingly ageless. The Saint Etienne frontwoman is the perfect fit for the urbane dance and pop music her bandmates Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have put together for over two decades, though they tried out some other singers before realizing how perfect she was. She emphasizes interpretation of lyrics and engagement in the material, exuding warmth and a sophistication that is down-to-earth rather than elitist. Let’s celebrate her birthday in style, by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle, and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.

This is the last South by Southwest post, I promise. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share with you some awesome photos I took @ Side Bar in Austin, Texas during CHIRP's sponsored showcase at SXSW. There were two stages during this day showcase featuring Austin bands on the outside stage and DC bands on the inside stage. Through out the day I ran back and forth between the outdoor stage and the indoor stage so I could capture all the action! Here is what I have for you...

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesRediscovering Our Record Collections: “Homogenic” by Björk

When Pitchfork Media announced earlier this year that Björk Guðmundsdóttir would be performing at this summer’s annual music festival, I scratched my head a little. Not because it would be weird to have Bjork there – I was trying to figure out why she hasn’t performed there yet. If there were ever a music event and an artist made for each other, these two would be it: eclectic, reveling in their originality, and possessing the kind of persona that invites obsessive behavior from fans.
