Jason Crock writesCHIRP Radio welcomes Henry Rollins “The Long March Tour”

CHIRP welcomes Henry Rollins for the first of three spoken-word performances at the Old Town School of Folk Music on Thursday, November 15th. While known for being one of seminal punk band Black Flag’s many singers as well as his later work in Rollins Band, he holds a Grammy award for the spoken-word version of his memoir, Get in The Van, and has extended his career through acting for film and television, hosting for television and radio, and continued activism.

Rollins’ “Long March” speaking tour is in support of a new book of photography and writing, Occupants, and he will also cover his recent travels to North Korea, Mongolia, Bhutan, Vietnam, India, Tibet, Sudan, Uganda, Haiti and Cuba. All shows begin at 8 PM. Visit oldtownschool.org for more info.

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Phil May Edition

The Pretty Things were formed by Phil May and Dick Taylor after the latter left The Rolling Stones. The Pretties started off as the sleazier alternative to the Stones, playing hard R & B laced rock ‘n’ roll, with great songs such as “Rosalyn” and “L.S.D.”. Like many ’60s bands, The Pretty Things gravitated towards psychedelia and experimentation and May really spearheaded those efforts, culminating in a classic rock opera. S.F. Sorrow, which was recorded before The Who’s Tommy. That didn’t hit and the Pretties settled into more of a blues rock groove. May has been the constant, and when I got to see them at The House of Blues, they didn’t disappoint. Let’s pay tribute to this underrated British rocker, by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle, and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday k.d. lang Edition

k.d. lang was alt-country before the term was invented. Similar to Robbie Fulks, lang managed to affectionately spoof country while upholding its best traditions, and with her great band the Reclines, she made some increasingly wonderful records. However, her politics (and her lesbianism) effectively forced her out of the genre, but she soldiered on, penning a big hit in “Constant Craving”, and establishing herself was one of the best singers of her generation. And, as her album last year showed, she’s still at her peak. Let’s celebrate k.d.‘s birthday by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.
