It’s been 20 years since a young Columbia College film student named Jay Bliznick established a film festival that would spotlight creative film and video work outside of the system that supports major Hollywood players and elitist distributor events. For him and others who share his passion for film and desire to see new, original projects, years of dedication and effort have established the Chicago Underground Film Festival as one of the most respected and anticipated annual events for cinephiles, movie buffs, and anyone else who wants to see the kind of independent, experimental, and documentary work that doesn't make it into the local metroplex.
This year’s festival will treat audiences to outstanding work from the past and present. In the words of Festival Coordinator Lori Felker, ”We've got a really energizing mix of films from the past 20 years mixed in with current in-competition films. It really gives you a sense of how broad the definition of ‘underground’ is, how weird ‘weird' can get, and interesting and talented people are.”
Now that the FCC has set a target date of this October for a low-power FM application window, it seems that everyone wants to talk with CHIRP about what's going on.
First, ABC7 featured CHIRP as part of their "Digital Underground" series (unfortunately, no Humpty Dance was played).
Then Wired.com showcased CHIRP in a nice low-power FM piece that also talked about a cool LPFM hopeful in South Carolina.
There are also a few other features coming soon. We'll let you know when they're available!

In 2011, some enterprising Chicagoans had an idea: every week they would collect tracks from exciting, innovative local artists and bands and send them out to the public as a way of spreading the word. Two years later, Chicago Mixtape is still going strong as more and more music fans hook in to the sweet sounds coming to their Inboxes each week.
This Saturday, February 23rd, Chicago Mixtape will celebrate its 2-Year Anniversary with a fundraising event at The Empty Bottle. Rapper Psalm One, soul revivalists The Congregation, and indie rockers Santah and Animal City will be onstage providing the jams, with a DJ set from White Mystery. As a participating sponsor, CHIRP Radio is proud to support our fellow local music fans in one of Chicago’s awesomest venues. Come join us for the celebration!
