Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Stephen Morris Edition

When I think of Stephen Morris, I think of the scene in the movie 24 Hour Party People, where producer Martin Hannett is berating Morris’s drumming, trying to mold him into a specific sound. Whether that scene is close the the truth, I do not know. What I do know, is that Morris’s drumming was a vital part of Joy Division’s sound, and then his steady beatkeeping kept people dancing to New Order tracks throughout the ’80s and beyond. In addition to a key role on so many great records, he married bandmate Gillian Gilbert. He has never been at the forefront of music, but that is often true of those who provide the backbeat. Let’s honor Morris on his birthday by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle, and sharing the first 10 tracks that come up.

Marking comedy out of politics isn’t easy at a time when politicians are so intent on doing it all by themselves. It takes a special group of performers to shine a satirical light on the current landscape, and we know just where you can find them.

Democracy Burlesque (where “Only the Politics are Naked!”) will take the stage tonight at Mary’s Attic in Andersonville with Hypocrisy Now!, their live-action takedown of the poseurs, preeners and pretenders who are trying to pass themselves off as our leaders.

This is the first of three shows that will be performed over the next month, will all proceeds going to benefit CHIRP Radio!! Join us for a great night of comedy and truth!

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Lux Interior Edition

He’s the garbage man. He’s got 96 tears and 96 eyes. He’s a teenage goo goo muck. The late Lux Interior, frontman for The Cramps, was all these things and more, as the Cleveland native, with his partner in crime Poison Ivy, gave rockabilly a creature features twist, saturating a classic form with cult pop culture and inspiring countless bands. The skinny oddball in tight leather pants and high heels was a crazed performer, but a lot of intelligence went into the look and sound of the band, who wrote originals that equalled the obscure covers that The Cramps made famous. Let’s do Lux a solid by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle, and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.
