Well folks, it’s here, whether you are ready or not. Fall is in the air. Time for bands to get their vans fueled up for this year’s epic tour. Time to finish up those citrus beers and make room in your fridge for the welcoming taste of Oktoberfest. Dig that beloved hoodie from under your bed and heck, make some chili while you’re at it.
Here at CHIRP, fall also is the time of year where we hold our semi-annual membership drive and reach out to our amazing and loyal listeners for support. You know the ones we’re talking about. Music videos ruled the eighties and early nineties as mainstream bits of cinema feeding our hungry pop-obsessed culture. Now, the rules have changed, and the video’s descent into the shadows of pop culture has opened doors to genre experimentation.
The Seen and Heard showcase highlights videos that embrace this change and shave the edges of video and music production. Filmmaker and curator of the showcase, Amir George, along with Zach Maderas guitar player for Outer Minds, Nelson Carvajal filmmaker and writer, and Todd Lillithum, program director for Chicago Filmmakers, talked with CHIRP’s Amye Frye about video’s redefinition.

They started out with limited abilities and those limitations led them to creating a minimalist style that ranks amongst the most influential of all of the bands of the post-punk era. Wire combined clipped rhythms and basic chords with aggressive lyrics and an ever developing melodic sense to create a truly distinctive sound. Frontman Colin Newman was primarily responsible for those melodies and his voice had a tonal range — he could sneer with the best of them, but could also lay back when necessary. Newman and Wire have gone through three (and perhaps four, with the current lineup) of iterations with the band, and he’s also done interesting work on solo projects and Githead. If there were a credible Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Wire would be in for sure. Let’s celebrate Colin’s birthday by grabbing the ol’ iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first ten songs that come up.
