Alex D writesIn Concert: Widowspeak and Pure Bathing Culture at Schubas (10/31/13)

If one had simply attended any other stop on Widowspeak and Pure Bathing Culture’s national tour throughout the last month, he or she might have experienced something similar to what he or she expected: dancing, general entertainment, and good music by talented musicians who have been categorized in one’s mind as “two bands I like”.

Kyle Whelliston writesJoin CHIRP for Kelly Hogan and Mark Eitzel at the Old Town School on Thursday, November 14!

CHIRP is overwhelmingly pleased to welcome Kelly Hogan and Mark Eitzel to the Old Town School of Music on Thursday, November 14. The show will be held at the Gary and Laura Maurer Concert Hall (the one on the western side of Lincoln Avenue), and will begin promptly at 8 pm.

Mark Eitzel, "America's greatest living lyricist" according to London's The Guardian newspaper, has been active since 1980 and first came to prominence as the leader of American Music Club, a group that peaked with aching slowcore classics Mercury and San Francisco in the early 1990s. During a decade-long AMC hiatus, Mr. Eitzel built up a solo career with relentless touring and collaborations with members of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and the Arcade Fire.

Rachel Woodall writesJoin Us for CHIRP Night at the Whistler with Distant Cities & KSRA!

It's time again for the CHIRP Night at the Whistler! This month on Monday, November 11, we welcome local bands Distant Cities and KSRA.

Distant Cities is a trio of illusive musicians with a sound they describe as “interminably cimmerian, voltaic-stygian, and scintillated.” In laymen's terms, their music is endlessly dark, electrified and hellish, and animated. (This writer admits needing to look up a few of those original terms, but after doing that and hearing the music, it all made sense.) The band has a dark, electronic sound. The setup is simple in theory: vocals, synth, and drums. Their music, however, is anything but simple. Each song is intricate and invites listeners to step outside of their own worlds. Come enjoy their dark, cosmic sounds!

KSRA is Rachel Sarah Thomas, a one-woman power machine. She is a producer, songwriter, and powerful singer. She describes her music as “90s chill pop.” It is an interesting combination which works: electric sounds, sampling, and her rich vocals all come together to make an addictive sound.

Come out to the Whistler this Monday night to support CHIRP and these upcoming local bands!
