Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesJoin Us for the Ravenswood ArtWalk Tour of Arts and Industry This Weekend!

(Poster design by Laura Matzen)

Ravenswood Avenue is one of the most unique thoroughfares in Chicago. Strategically tucked between the busier and noisier North Side streets, tree-lined Ravenswood is a parallel oasis of commercial and creative activity, an urban planner’s dream come true.

The numerous artists and artisans who work on the avenue will be on display when Ravenswood ArtWalk presents the 13th annual Tour of Arts & Industry on October 4th and 5th from 11:00am to 7:00pm (6:00pm on Sunday). Over 150 artists will be featured as they open their studios and display offices to the public for free. There will also be a street festival on Saturday, the Ravensood Artwalk Detour, which will feature live music, a craft beer garden, and a food truck roundup. CHIRP Radio will have a table there too, while also providing music to accompany your day!

Autumn is in the air, and this is a perfect way to spend what’s going to be a wonderful weekend inside and out before Winter sets in once again. See you there!

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesDon’t Miss the Homeroom Chicago Songwriter Showcase on Thursday October 2nd

(Poster art by Matthew Kohnhorst)

CHIRP Radio is proud to team with Homeroom Chicago, an independent, nonprofit arts programming group, in presenting the first in a series of Songwriter Showcases at Columbia College’s HAUS at the Quincy Wong Center (623 S. Wabash). These showcases will give audience members the opportunity to listen to these songwriters perform in an intimate setting without a backing band as well as interact with artists as they talk about their songwriting process and influences. This is a great chance to hear about the technique and philosophy of songwriting from working musicians who are willing to share their love of their art and craft.

This Thursday, October 2nd, features performances and talks with J.C. Brooks, Kate Adams, Odea, and Isaiah Oby. Go to Homeroom Chicago’s Web site for more information.

SKaiser writesCheck Out These Pictures from the Active Transportation Alliance Four Star Bike & Chow Event!

The Active Transportation Alliance – aka Active Trans – organizes events like the Four Star Bike & Chow to support their work of promoting a safe and active environment for walkers, bikers, pedestrians and transit users.

“Active Trans is Chicagoland’s nonprofit advocacy group with more than 7,000 members, 20,000 campaign supporters, and 30,000 annual bike event participants supporting our work to make it better and safer to get around communities and neighborhoods around the region,” Ethan Spotts, Deputy Executive Director for Events & Marketing said.

The Bike & Chow event also provides an opportunity for local businesse to connect with communities, while people experience "new" parts of Chicago, try new foods and meet new people.

The mission of Active Trans is to make bicycling, walking and public transit so safe, convenient and fun that we achieve a significant shift from environmentally harmful, sedentary travel to clean, active travel. They advocate for transportation that encourages and promotes safety, physical activity, health, recreation, social interaction, equity, environmental stewardship and resource conservation.

SKaiser writesSolo Artists Create Local Business in Chicago

by Shawna Kaiser

How much passion comes to mind when you think “local business?" Not too much, really? All of us pass countless storefronts as we go about the day, but then there are those loving business owners working their craft from inside a living room, all while (more than likely) keeping day jobs intact.

Take Sarah deHebreard for example. She is the owner of bonnie, a naturally nourishing skin and body care business in Chicago. She moved here in 2007, started bonnie in 2010, and a couple years ago needed to find a larger apartment for the growing amount of product coming out of her kitchen.

“The local business owners I’m most familiar with are ones in similar situations; they work from home, along with   another full- or part-time day job, and they  don’t get out much, unless they’re participating in a festival or craft market,” she said  in an interview after participating in Coterie at Pitchfork.

With a product line ranging from facial and skin care to body balm candles (which are delightful, check them out to the right) deHebreard is looking forward to accomplishing a new connection with the community – consumer education on cosmetic ingredients.

“A lot of people are scared of certain types of ingredients based on industry buzzwords (sulfates, parabens, etc.) but not many people can explain why,” Sarah said. “It's my hope to help educate consumers about the safety of all  types of ingredients and further understand what they're putting on their skin.  For example, not being able to pronounce an ingredient should not make one assume that it’s not safe or naturally-derived; instead it should inspire the consumer to look it up, and learn a new word!”

"I'd love to have a learning library in my store (someday) where people could learn about individual ingredients; how they're made, where they come from, why they're used, and include published research,” Sarah deHebreard, owner of Bonnie, said.
