Eddie writesFlippin’ A! Five More Songs with F-Bombs in the Title

Last June Eddie Sayago cited some great songs that feature the king of profanities. Here are five more…

Pennywise, “F$$k Authority“ from the album Land of the Free? (2001, Epitaph)

The punk-rock band from California chose its name from the very terrifying clown in Stephen King’s novel It. They were one of the many punk bands that arose from the SoCal punk scene of the 1990s, along with Sublime, Green Day, The Offspring, and blink-182. Since they never were signed to a major label, this song could a big f-you to the suits who controlled what kids bought and listened it before the age of illegal downloading, YouTube, and social media.

ronharlow writesTake Two: “Blinded By the Light” (Bruce Springsteen vs. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band)

written by Ron Harlow

Without ever trying, I’ve heard “Blinded by the Light” by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band countless times, and so have you. It sounds like the guy is singing, “ripped up like a douche.” Recently, a friend tried to convince me the disputed lyric is actually “deuce.” I was skeptical. Then he tried to convince me the song is a Bruce Springsteen cover. I was incredulous.

I’m no more than an average Springsteen fan. I was there when he played Wrigley Field in 2012. I didn’t actually see him; I was sitting on the curb on Waveland Avenue. But I liked what I heard; when I wasn’t listening to the girl I was more interested in sitting next to me on the curb. I own used copies of Born to Run and Born in the USA on vinyl, but I’ve never taken a head-first dive into Springsteen’s discography, which is why I’d never listened to his first album: Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ.

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle: Happy Birthday Heinz Burt Edition

Today we pay tribute to Heinz Burt, bass player for the ‘60s band The Tornados. The band is best known for their song “Telstar,” a trippy instrumental written in 1962 and named after a communications satellite that went into orbit in the same year. This song is also known for being the first track from a UK Pop group to reach #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (although not the first UK recording to do so – that distinction belongs to the clarinet instrumental “Stranger on the Shore,” released earlier in the year). Soon after “Telstar” hit, The British Invasion would go into full swing, with the Tornados along for the ride. Wish Heinz a posthumous Happy Birthday by taking your MP3 player, pressing the “shuffle” button, and sharing the first 10 songs you hear:

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesPics from the 2015 Pitchfork Music Festival and CHIRP Record Fair

The 10th annual Pitchfork Music Festival was a sight to behold. What turned out to be (mostly) beautiful summer weather set the mood for three days of brilliant performances, capped by a titanic set from Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper on Sunday. Not even a torrential downpour on Saturday could stop the good times on the stages or at the CHIRP Record Fair and Other Delights. As usual, it was a blast…here’s to the next 10 years!
