From March 15-21, the Columbia College Chicago Department of Creative Writing presented its 19th Annual Story Week Festival of Writers. Story Week 2015 offered a schedule jam-packed with readings, conversations with authors, panels, performances, and book signings at venues throughout Chicago—all free and open to the public.

This Story Week signature event featured candid, humorous author readings along with complementary music selections. The event capped off with a Frankie Knuckles music tribute spun by Host/DJ Joe Shanahan, owner of Metro.

Artist Interviews Toupee

Nestled in their Pilsen apartment, CHIRP's Eddie Sayago met up with roommates and four-piece, Toupee. Toupee underscored how trust impacts its musicality, declared their nocturnal & impulsive tendencies, and reflected on cataloging life's experiences in their timeline of injuries.

Toupee released its sophomore LP, Leg Toucher, on Moniker Records, on July 7. Toupee will be on tour in the NE and will be back in the great Midwest on August 4 for a show at the The Bishop in Bloomington, IN.

Volunteer: Stories of Philanthropy The Urban Art Retreat

On this edition of our series on volunteerism, reporter Christoper Johnson takes us on a day trip to the Urban Art Retreat in North Lawndale. It's a community center, art space, and refuge for women who've suffered abuse. Dianna Long is this volunteer-run organization's director. She guides art programs for kids in the neighborhood, programs she wishes she'd had access to during her own traumatic childhood. Long says the kids "need to know we care about them, and if they really need us, there's a place to go."

Artist Interviews Dan Deacon

Taste the rainbow with Dan Deacon, the self-proclaimed "Pepperoni Pizza Combos Tropical Skittle" of the live music world. Before the Chicago show for his North American tour in support of Gliss Riffer, Cher Vincent sat down with the electronic wizard to talk about how relaxation is the catalyst for creativity, the origination of his famous dance circles, the importance of engaging the physicality of sound in a live performance, and buying milk.
