Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Merle Haggard Edition

Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash both made their mark at San Quentin. Cash did so with a live album. Haggard did so as an inmate. Yes, when this legend sang classics like “Mama Tried”, about being a bad man in need of redemption, he spoke from experience. Along with Buck Owens, Haggard established a California honky-tonk sound. Moreover, Haggard was a brilliant songwriter with a populist streak, who could write about interracial romance (“Irma Jackson”) in the most liberal of ways while also penning conservative anthems like “Okie From Muskogee”. Like any legend, Haggard has had his ups and downs, but the still makes good records today and is one of the most winning live performers you could ever hope to see, with an excellent sense of humor. Let’s pay tribute to Hag by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.

Shawn Campbell writesThe CHIRP Record Fair & Other Delights Celebrates 10 Years

The CHIRP Record Fair & Other Delights is coming right up on April 14th and 15th at Plumbers Hall, 1340 W. Washington Blvd. 2012 marks the tenth year for the Fair and its Other Delights, once again providing a paradise for vinyl enthusiasts, with something for everyone, from rarities for the serious collector to affordable selections for the casual fan. Even if you’re not a record buyer, the event should hold pleasures, including artwork and crafts, chances to win prizes through games and raffles, a photo booth, DJs, food and drink provided by Irazu and Goose Island, respectively, and a kids’ area to entertain the little ones. We’ll even have a live performance by Blue Ribbon Glee Club.

The Fair runs 10AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday, with a special early bird admission session for serious collectors from 8-10AM Saturday. Regular admission is $7 or $5 with a flyer or ad. Saturday pre-admission is $25, and allows readmission throughout the weekend.

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Astrud Gilberto

She is the Queen of Bossa Nova. Astrud Gilberto is immortal, based solely on her performance of the classic “The Girl From Ipanema”. But her contributions to Brazilian and jazz music run deep that that. She got her start on the Getz/Gilberto album, at the urging of her husband Joao Gilberto (whom she later left for Stan Getz! Musicians!). Eventually, she went out on her own, though often working with Getz. She had a long and successful career singing bossa nova, jazz and pop standards, and eventually composing her own material. Though she informally retired from the business in 2002, her biggest known hit is bigger than ever. Indeed, it is the favorite song of one of my nephews, who is six years old, and already has great taste. Let’s celebrate Ms. Gilberto’s birthday by grabbing your iPod or MP3 Player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.
