CHIRP Radio Best of 2014

Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2014. Our next list is from volunteer Kelsey Phillips.

Bestiary by Hail Mary Mallon (Rhymesayers)
Hail Mary Mallon BestiaryBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic come together once again to give us tracks like "Jonathan". "Jonathan" is everything.

Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs (Secretly Canadian)
The War On Drugs Lost In The DreamBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Adam Granduciel is a wizard.

Atlas by Real Estate (Domino)
Real Estate AtlasBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

This is one of my favorite albums in a long time. It might be completely due to Matt Mondanile's guitar leads on "Had To Hear." But it's all good regardless.

Disgraceland by The Orwells (Atlantic)
The Orwells DisgracelandBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Not just teenagers from the suburbs anymore, The Orwells show off their bigger production value on this one.

Underneath The Rainbow by Black Lips (Interscope)
Black Lips Underneath The RainbowBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Garage rock in pure form. With some help from Bradford Cox.

Oxymoron by Schoolboy Q (Interscope)
Schoolboy Q OxymoronBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

This is West Coast rap at it's finest, set to Schoolboy Q's story-telling lyrics and plenty of guest appearances.

Wild Onion by Twin Peaks (Grand Jury)
Twin Peaks Wild OnionBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

These hometown boys show us a more polished, thoughtful version of their power chord-heavy tracks.

Here And Nowhere Else by Cloud Nothings (Carpark)
Cloud Nothings Here And Nowhere ElseBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Not as dark as 2012's Attack On Memory, but the punk trio still knocks out some hard-hitting tracks.

Run The Jewels 2 by Run The Jewels (Mass Appeal)
Run The Jewels Run The Jewels 2BUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Their first album made my Top 10 list last year, and they did it again this year. El-P and Killer Mike can't make bad music together.

Kenny Dennis III by Serengeti (Joyful Noise)
Serengeti Kenny Dennis IIIBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Chicago's (and CHIRP softball's) own Serengeti (born David Cohn) released Kenny Dennis III this year, which is more of the greatness that was "Dennehy."

Honorable Mentions

Step Brothers -- Lord Steppington

BOYTOY -- BOYTOY

Woods -- With Light And With Love
