Erik Roldan writesCHIRP + Coach House Sounds Present: Deadbeat

Deadbeat might be hard to google – their search results might lead you to believe they are lazy, or otherwise not active. You’d be sorely mistaken – Jessica Risker, aka, Deadbeat, is busy in Chicago and when not sampling found sounds, she’s releasing music with her other musical projects. CHIRP is happy to present Deadbeat’s Coach House Sounds Session streamable at coachhousesounds.com starting Tuesday, March 20, 2012.

1. What the dumbest thing you’ve ever done in a basement?

Well I live in a basement apartment, so dumb shit happens in there all the time. Once I was fumigating for bats in the apartment when a heavy storm rolled in. Little did I know the basement was prone to flooding. In the end I got rid of the bats but now I have a fish problem.

2. Can you tell me about one time when you realized this was YOUR city?

空はホットピンクを回し、涼しい風がインチロール

(Editor’s note: Google translate — “Turn the hot pink sky, cool breeze roll in.”

3. Describe a scenario where Deadbeat could be someone’s life coach and the top 2 life lessons you’d teach them.

I’m glad you asked that. First I’d do an intake, and assess their disposition and presenting problem. I’d oscillate between empathic listening and actively raising their awareness of projection, which in my opinion is the most interesting of the defense mechanisms. Keeping a close eye on transference issues, I would address the mental construct of time, the phantom thought processes behind fear and anxiety, and our non-stop mental dialogues. Above all I’d urge them to continually return their attention to the present moment. In the end, of course, we’d address termination issues.

4. Tell me about your CHS session—what did you like about it? Was there anything that surprised you or was spontaneous that came out in the recording?

It was awesome! The guys were great. It was good to listen back, and get a sense of what’s working and what I want to work on.

5. What’s happening? What are your current/upcoming shows or releases?

I’m getting ready to release a Deadbeat EP called “My Eyes Are Bleeding Bits of Gold.” The backstory is I found a cassette on the ground a few years ago, and rediscovered it recently. The entire cassette is one guy vehemently trying to convince the listener to join his pyramid scheme selling Lifeforce vitamins. He’s got so many great expressions, I pulled out the best samples and built an EP around it. I’m going to release it digitally and on 7” vinyl this summer.

My band, Absinthe & The Dirty Floors, also just released our second EP, entitled Side 2. You can stream it now at thedirtyfloors.bandcamp.com. We recorded it ourselves, and it’s dancey rock with some noise and psychedelic influences.

As for shows, I’m playing an acoustic set at the Hungry Brain on Monday March 26. Matt Baron, the founder of Coach House Sounds will also be playing, as well as Judson Clairborne.
