Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle - Happy Birthday Keith Flint Edition

Today we wish a very Happy Birthday to Keith Flint, lead vocalist for the band The Prodigy. This group helped pioneer the Big Beat electronic music sub-genre in the ‘90s with a sound that, like the mighty shark, hasn’t evolved much over time, mainly because it hasn’t had to. Their fundamentally loud, abrasive, scorching sound doesn’t lend itself to mainstream consumption. It's music for raving, and Flint’s Punk-as-@$!*, trouble-in-mind voice is a perfect front for the assault. Let’s wish him a Happy B-Day (and good luck with the band’s new album, The Day Is My Enemy, coming out next week) by taking your MP3 player, pressing the "shuffle" button, and sharing the first 10 songs you hear:

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle – Happy Birthday Lee “Scratch” Perry Edition

He didn’t invent Reggae or Dub by himself, but from the fundamental influence he had on the music of his homeland of Jamaica and the world at large, he might as well have. If you’re at all familiar with the unique grooves that poured from the Caribbean islands, chances are you’ve heard Perry’s work. He was a creative force of nature who worked in a truly independent spirit, starting out with Studio One, "The Motown of Jamaica," then building the legendary Black Art studio in his back yard only to burn it down when he could no longer stand the trifling interference of lesser minds (that story may not be true, but it’s too good not to be, so let’s just say it is).

Celebrate the arrival of Spring and the birthday of the ultimate Upsetter by taking your MP3 player, pushing the “shuffle” button, and sharing the first 10 songs that come up:

Mike Bennett writesFriday MP3 Shuffle - Happy Birthday Sly Stone Edition

[originally published March 2013]

By the age 11, Sylvester Stone had mastered piano, guitar, bass and drums. All the better to eventually lead a large band that mixed soul, rock, pop and funk in the most sublime combination. He got the nickname Sly in grade school (after a classmate misspelled his name as Slyvester), and grew up to be a popular DJ in San Francisco. He went on to produce The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men and Grace Slick’s first band, The Great Society. Finally, he formed one of the greatest bands in American history, Sly and the Family Stone.

Over the course of six albums and many singles, Sly Stone and his band showed incredible breadth, putting out classic after classic. Of course, Sly is a recluse and eccentric now, but his legacy is staggering. Let’s pay tribute to the legend by sharing the first 10 songs that come up on your iPod or MP3 player.

Mike Bennett writesFriday MP3 Shuffle — Happy Birthday Mark E. Smith Edition

[originally published 2010]

Since the late ’70s, The Fall has been the crap that talks back. As the late, great John Peel so aptly put it, The Fall always sounds different, the Fall always sounds the same. This is because of the sole constant in the band, the man who seemingly says “unh” after every phrase in his hectoring Mancunian accent, Mark E. Smith. Whether it’s careening off-kilter rockabilly or heavily electronic music, Smith’s torrent of acidic observations and musical adaptability have made The Fall one of the greatest bands ever, whose influence is immeasurable. In honor of Mr. Smith, please grab your iPod or MP3 player, hit shuffle and share the first ten tunes:

Mike Bennett writesFriday MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Roger Daltrey Edition

[originally published March 2013]

He was the brawling tough guy who cleaned up real well when The Who became the ultimate Mod band. He has always been a rocker who provided balance to the sensitive artist side of Pete Townshend. And while he was not the best of the bluesy British Invasion singers, he came into his own as The Who shifted into a bigger arena rock sound, with his scream in “Won’t Get Fooled Again” being one of the signature moments of ‘70s rock. Moreover, Daltrey is a fan and seems fairly in touch with his working class roots. One of my favorite moments in the documentary on Brian Wilson’s revival of Smile is Daltrey visiting Brian backstage before the first performance, clearly in fanboy mode. Let’s pay tribute to one of the first true rock god frontmen by grabbing your iPod, hitting shuffle, and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.
