As the sad news spread around the Net last week of Charlie Cooper’s passing, many of us here at CHIRP were shocked. Whether you only knew Charlie through the music of Telefon Tel Aviv or you knew him as a friend, he will surely be missed. Here at CHIRP we want to send our best to Josh and to Charlie’s family during this hard time.
There will be a memorial service at Sonotheque, Sunday Feb 8th, from 5-8PM, for friends to remember Charlie. A message on Facebook said this:
The foyer at Sonotheque will be a room to remember Charlie in photos. If you have printed images of Charlie, please bring them with you. You can retrieve them after the memorial.
If you have digital images of Charlie, upload them to the flickr pool. There will be a slideshow at the memorial with all of the photos, so please upload them by Saturday evening.
Please pass along this information to other friends of Charlie who may not already know about the memorial service.
Cramps’ frontman Lux Interior passed away today at a Glendale,California hospital, due to a previously existing heart condition. Lux, whose real name was Erick Lee Purkhiser was 62.
The Cramps have been credited as pioneering “psychobilly” which pairs rockabilly, and surf guitar.
The official statement from Girlie Action, The Cramps’ media representatives reads: “The Cramps emerged from the original New York punk scene of CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, with a singular sound and iconography. Their distinct take on rockabilly and surf along with their midnight movie imagery reminded us all just how exciting, dangerous, vital and sexy rock and roll should be and has spawned entire subcultures. Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly.”
Just when I start to feel comfortable calling myself a DJ, a mix will surface somewhere at a club or on the internet and I’m left completely dumbfounded. How the hell did they do that?
2 Many DJ’s filled in for the Rob Da Bank radio show on Radio 1, and they prepared two absolutely spectacular one-hour mixes. For the first hour the duo meticulously smashes together 420 “intros” and for the second, they do an uptempo, disco, bubbly sort of set.
You can download their set here and read on for the full tracklisting.

It looks as though Christian “Dark Knight” Bale really does have some anger issues to deal with. If you remember the incident he had a few months back when he shoved his own mother, then you probably won’t be surprised to hear this bit of audio recording from a profanity laced outburst that happened on the set of Terminator 4. Celebrity gossip site TMZ reports that “During a scene, Shane Hurlbut (seriously), director of cinematography, screwed up a shot — at least in Christian’s mind. We’re told Bale went wild, screaming “I will kick your ass” along with some other choice remarks. Several hundred people — including Military Police — heard the outburst, which was described as “intense.”
The audio recording that film execs sent the tape to the insurance company to insured the film in case Bale bailed was leaked to the internet, and has already inspired the LA band Mae-Shi to record an audio tribute to Bale, the consummate professional.
As Brad Shi explains “We thought it was so crazy that we, The Mae Shi, wrote and recorded a song about it. I should clarify and say that this isn’t really a Mae Shi song, it’s a tribute song we made to celebrate the epic-ness of Christian Bale. Bale’s performance as John Connor in the upcoming Terminator 4 “Redemption” Film will no doubt be one of the greatest of all time. He will win every Oscar for his performance, even the special effects and animation ones.”

UPDATE!!!
Revolucian (producer for the new RuPaul album) made a remix as well.
It’s a chilly February afternoon, and I’m feeling a bit feverish, but this a different sort of fever than the nasty flu bug that’s been going around (ok, i’ve actually got that too). I just got word from our record fair director that we’ve secured a new venue for the 2009 CHIRP Record Fair and Other Delights. For a vinyl junkie like myself, this is like hearing a shipment of primo narcotics just rolled into town. I’m unbelievably pscyhed!
Mark your calendars folks; April 18th and 19th the 2009 edition of our yearly record fair will be taking place at a NEW LOCATION: Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union, LOCAL 130 UA (1340 West Washington Boulevard, Chicago, IL).
And somehow, the internet gods must have heard about this exquisite news, because for one week only, starting February 2nd, Pitchfork.tv will be showing Desperate Man Blues, a documentary about Joe Bussard, the king of all record collectors.
Bussard’s stories are the stuff of record collector legend….in a lengthy article in the Washington City Paper, author Eddie Dean captures the tale of one of Bussard’s most infamous finds, a one of a kind Black Patti, “Original Stack O’ Lee Blues” by the Down Home Boys, Long Cleve Reed and Little Harvey Hull.
What makes Bussard such an undeniable force in old-time music circles isn’t simply his collection but what he has done with it over the years. It is a bizarre fusion of obsessive, almost pathological hoarding and an equally strong impulse for rampant dissemination. He’s got to have this stuff, yes, but he wants the whole world to hear it, too. In 2003, Old Hat Records released Down In The Basement: Joe Bussard’s Treasure Trove of Vintage 78s 1926-1937, a fantastic collection of choice gems from Bussard’s 25,000 plus 78rpm records. The collector’s edition 2-disc digi-pack is out of print, but you can still snag the single disc version. Many of his records have popped up on collections put out by the Yazoo label, and for those ultra curious folks, you can hear “Original Stack O’ Lee Blues” on the Yazoo comp THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF: Super Rarities & Unissued Gems of the 1920s & 30s
In addition to acquiring 78s, Bussard founded the Fonotone label and his copies of records have been lent to brilliant compilations from Dust-to-Digital and others (he also issued records by fellow collector John Fahey). Director Edward Gillan’s 2003 film tells the story of Bussard’s obsession and, by extension, the story of the early recording industry and the music that would become a cornerstone of American culture.
If you miss out on catching the documentary, don’t fret; you can also get it on DVD from the fine folks at Dust to Digital.
I’ll be seeing you at the record fair!
