Jeremy Peruski writesMusic in Pictures: Matt & Kim at the Congress Theater (11/10/12)

The Brooklyn-based duo, Matt & Kim brought their energetic, packed set to the Congress Theater last week for what they called "the biggest crowd at a show this tour." They plowed through a 90-minute set with such ease and passion. M&K both stated how much they looked forward to this stop on the tour. Matt was amazed how it seemed like just yesterday they were playing basement shows in Chicago.

They played a suitable mix of songs from all four albums. "Now" was the highlight for me from their new album Lighting. The crowd chanted "Now! Now! Now!" as the lyrics were being displayed on the large screen behind them as balloons were being thrown around like it was New Years Eve. Maybe it was the amalgamation of the balloons and the confetti that made it seem like New Years Eve in NYC. The highlight for the crowd seemed to be the track "Daylight," from their album Grand. The boisterous crowd threw their hands in the air and belted every single lyric at the top of their lungs.

Kim, of course, fearlessly walked all over her drums, made intense faces and pointed to people all across the audience. Maybe it is just hopeful thinking, but I swear half the time she was staring right into my lens. Matt jammed away at his keyboard, jumping up and down, and hardly able to stand still. He was eager to talk between almost every song during the set.

I had a chance to meet Matt & Kim two years ago before one of their shows during the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. While they are both really down-to-earth, levelheaded people, the duo seemed to feed off the crowd’s energy and with that comes their frenetic stage presence.

Matt sure didn't lie when he said, "I promise we will see you soon, if you see us soon," as they are slated to open for Passion Pit at the UIC Pavilion on February 22, 2013.
