CHIRP Radio writesCHIRP Radio’s Best of 2024: n23haynes

CHIRP Radio Best of 2024Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2024. Our next list is from vounteer n23haynes.

2024 was full of so much great music in every genre--pop, rock, rap and beyond. Anyone who tells you that music is in a sad state doesn't know what they're talking about.

#1 Grief Chapter by Mother Mother (Warner Music Canada)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Mother Mother Grief ChapterThis album is like if someone took 25 great song ideas and squished them down into 12 tracks. As you listen you have to wonder just how they came up with this...almost operatic in structure. Great dynamics across the album. Listen to: "Days"

#2 Empathogen by WILLOW (Three Six Zero/Gamma)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

WILLOW EmpathogenWillow is one of the most talented artists working today. Her vocal range is stunning, and this is a beautifully produced alternative jazz album. Listen to: "run!"

#3 Short n' Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter (Island)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Sabrina Carpenter Short n' SweetWhoever is on Sabrina's writing team deserves a raise--both in song structure and in lyrical content, this album is the gift that keeps on giving. If a song doesn't hit with you right away, keep on listening and eventually it'll click. An aptly named album in the midst of bloated projects from other artists this year. Listen to: "Coincidence"

#4 BRAT by Charli xcx (Atlantic)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Charli xcx BRATHonestly probably deserves album of the year just from its cultural impact. Brings club music, edm, and hyperpop to (or back to) the mainstream. Still believe Charli can do better, but a solid solid project. Listen to: "Girl, so confusing" ft. Lorde

#5 No Hands by Joey Valence and Brae (JVB)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Joey Valence and Brae No HandsEminem wishes he could make a comedy-rap album like this. A combination of classic boom-bap and modern rap sensibilities. Too many good bars to count. Listen to: "DOUGHBOY"

#6 Only God Was Above Us by Vampire Weekend (Columbia)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Vampire Weekend Only God Was Above UsSuch a technically well-constructed album. Quite impressive how Vampire Weekend can make 10 songs that all blend together but still sound distinct. At the top of their game, and great live, too. Listen to: "Capricorn"

#7 Challengers Original Score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Milan)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Challengers Original ScoreA gripping techno score that perfectly matches the energy of the movie. One of the only scores ever that I've walked out of the theater googling to hear again. Great workout music too. Listen to: "Challengers: Match Point"

#8 World Wide Whack by Tierra Whack (Interscope)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Tierra Whack World Wide WhackFind myself returning to parts of this album over and over again. It's cheeky and reflective, brash and depressed. Everything you could want in a modern internet-y rap/R&b project. Listen to: "Numb"

#9 Bando Stone and The New World by Childish Gambino (RCA)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Childish Gambino Bando Stone and The New WorldA bit of an overwhelming album at 1 hour long, but you don't need to take it all in at once. Listen to a few songs and come back later. It'll still be there to show you more of what it has to offer. Listen to: "Lithonia"

#10 Clancy by Twenty One Pilots (Fueled By Ramen)

BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Twenty One Pilots ClancyAlthough Twenty One Pilots has lost their rawness and edge, they've replaced that with experience and skill. Some of the best instrumental layering and use of Tyler Joseph's vocals throughout their discography. Listen to: "Oldies Station"

Honorable Mentions

"Prelude to Ecstasy" - The Last Dinner Party
"Neon Pill" - Cage The Elephant
"Head Body Connector" - Psymon Spine
"can we start over?" - Charlotte Sands
