Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2020. Our next list is from DJ Megatron.
What a year - the many complications of 2020 made for a year where I needed some kind of fun. That arrived in the many dance and electronic albums released this year that kept me going. Many of those are highlighted in this top ten list.
It has been a joy to provide music on Monday mornings during this difficult time. It is my hope that CHIRP has brought you some moments of calm during the storm that was 2020. In addition, thank you so much to our donors that gave so much to keep us going. It is appreciated and we are grateful.
#1 Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple (Epic)
Delightfully complex, full of emotion, unique, and filled with lyrics that question and amuse. Fiona Apple is always great, but this album is next level.
#2 Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa (Warner)
A perfect pop album. During tough times in May 2020, this album kept me going. It is the perfect mix of 80s, 90s, Disco, but sounds modern.
#3 What's Your Pleasure? by Jessie Ware (PMR/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
Jessie Ware's breathy disco vibes are downright sexy.
#4 Roisin Machine by Roisin Murphy (SKINT/SMG)
More delicious disco from Irish singer Roisin Murphy. A mix of disco and house, this album sounds so luxe with straightforward vocals. Note, there are moments of punk and many nods to Grace Jones throughout.
#5 Chromatica by Lady Gaga (Streamline/Interscope)
I want this stupid album! (A little joke.) One non-stop dance party heavy on the 90s house vibes, this album also kept me in a better mind space in May 2020. It is a super over the top creation that is fun, but has moments tackling serious topics. Another gem of a dance album from 2020.
#6 Shore by Fleet Foxes (ANTI-)
Fleet Foxes always take you on a musical adventure with soaring vocals. Robin Pecknold's voice always takes me on journey and the harmonies always provide moments of ASMR.
#7 Dark Hearts by Annie (self-released)
This is Annie on a mid and low tempo vibe and I dig it. Her first album in many years and it doesn't disappoint.
#8 New Me, Same Us by Little Dragon (Ninja Tune)
Funky electro pop and catchy as hell. Little Dragon always provides great beats and melodies that groove.
#9 Eddie by Busty and the Bass (Arts & Crafts)
Fantastic jazzy funky R&B from Montreal.
#10 Lianne La Havas by Lianne La Havas (Nonesuch)
Beautiful lyrics, melodies, and a lush soul.
