Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle: Happy Birthday Joe Strummer Edition

Today we wish a posthumous Happy Birthday to Joe Strummer, co-founder and lead singer of The Clash. Starting out in the '70s UK Punk scene, the band's global reach was in the music, as they incorporated Reggae, Ska, Dub, Rockabilly and Funk into their sound. London Calling and Combat Rock put the band at the top of the charts, with Strummer's politically charged lyrics and musical influences inspired people looking to express themselves socially and artistically. Celebrate his birthday by taking your MP3 player, pressing the "shuffle" button, and sharing the first 10 songs you hear:

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle: Happy Birthday Heinz Burt Edition

Today we pay tribute to Heinz Burt, bass player for the ‘60s band The Tornados. The band is best known for their song “Telstar,” a trippy instrumental written in 1962 and named after a communications satellite that went into orbit in the same year. This song is also known for being the first track from a UK Pop group to reach #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (although not the first UK recording to do so – that distinction belongs to the clarinet instrumental “Stranger on the Shore,” released earlier in the year). Soon after “Telstar” hit, The British Invasion would go into full swing, with the Tornados along for the ride. Wish Heinz a posthumous Happy Birthday by taking your MP3 player, pressing the “shuffle” button, and sharing the first 10 songs you hear:

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle: Happy Birthday Vince Guaraldi Edition

It would be very difficult to be a young child growing up in the ‘80s or ‘90s with a TV set in the house to not come across at least one of the Charlie Brown specials on a yearly basis. And it would be impossible to think about those cartoons without thinking of the music Vince Guaraldi created for the Peanuts gang. The idea of adding music from a ‘60s Jazz trio to a children’s cartoon probably seemed a little left-field at the time. It turned out to be a genius idea by series creator Charles M. Schultz and his creative team, as Guaraldi’s alternately languid and sprightly piano, always played with an undercurrent of melancholy, matched Schultz’ characters and world perfectly. Guaraldi’s cool, graceful pieces made Charlie Brown’s travails a little easier to endure for young audiences while also adding some real sophistication to their music experiences.

Wish a posthumous Happy Birthday to this jazzman by taking your MP3 player, pressing the "shuffle" button, and sharing the first 10 songs that you hear:

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle: Happy Birthday Ronnie James Dio Edition

Metal is fun. That’s one of the unspoken messages from Ronnie James Dio whenever he flashed the Sign of the Horns gesture he made standard issue in head-banger circles in the ‘70s and ‘80s. That gesture gave generations of fans their own shorthand for community and good times. A gifted vocalist whose neoclassical leanings added a new dimension to Metal’s sound and fury, Dio is best known for fronting Rainbow, Black Sabbath (following Ozzy Osbourne’s departure), and the band that was named after him. By the time of his untimely death in 2010, Dio’s reputation not just as a great singer but a representative of the genre was more than secure.

It’s only fitting that we throw horns in his honor on the occasion of his birthday. You can also play the MP3 Shuffle by sharing the first 10 songs you hear when you press the shuffle button on your MP3 player…

Clarence Ewing: The Million Year Trip writesFriday MP3 Shuffle: Happy Birthday Vince Clarke Edition

Today we say Happy Birthday to one of the most accomplished musicians and songwriters from the world of Synthpop. Vince Clarke was one of the original members of Depeche Mode and wrote many of their early songs, including their first UK top-10 hit “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Although their album Speak and Spell put them on the map as a musical force, Clarke and his band mates parted ways soon after its release. No hard feelings, though; While the band went on to international stardom, Clarke teamed up with singer Alison Moyet to form Yazoo (Yaz if you’re in North America) and released two albums, one of which is the underrated classic Upstairs at Eric’s. He then joined forces with vocalist Andy Bell to form the duo Erasure and sail through the charts with Dance-Pop hits like “Oh L’Amour,” “Chains of Love,” “A Little Respect,” and “Breathe.”

Along with having mastered analog and digital electronic instruments, Clarke has produced a fantastic catalogue of music. Wish him a Happy Birthday by taking your MP3 player, pressing the “shuffle” button, and sharing the first 10 songs you hear:
