My Dad raised me on The Four Freshmen, Stan Kenton, Dave Brubeck, Andy Williams and June Christy. Kenton had an album where the orchestra "Plays Chicago" -- meaning the compositions of Chicago, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Chicago VI was my first album purchase, and also the first step in expanding my own library. Always a huge fan of radio, I joined my college radio station (then, an exclusively 'carrier current' broadcast), and my interests expanded exponentially. While everyone spent their money on alcohol, I invested mine at Flat, Black and Circular.
Since that time, I developed quite the library. There was a period of stasis, disinterest, and lack of passion as radio became monopolized by corporations and the same five Rolling Stones songs were played for the 40th year running (despite the depth of catalog). I think I invested in wardrobe artifacts instead.
But when CHIRP began broadcasting, it felt like the 'old' days. A wide range of music, a diversity of tastes, new classics and old favorites. It took no time to get hooked and re-awaken the passion.
After a handful of years of teasing, I finally committed to join the CHIRP team. I started as a sub, and had some pretty rough trials regaining confidence in front of the mic, but now I'm pleased as pie to be spinning licorice discs again. Music variety is what drives my weekly show -- new music assembled by the crack CHIRP Music Department, mixed with a deep CHIRP Library, and my own vast-and-growing collection of music-infused artifacts -- and please pardon the delivery vehicle (my brain and vocal chords).
Like all our dedicated, knowledgable CHIRP DJs, the daily soundtracks we broadcast to the universe are highly individual. We pull from our interests and preferences, experiences and diversities, and mix a range of musical styles and genres. It's always different and always fun to bring new music to your ears, and usually comes with personal stories, background info, local show dates, and passionate connections. We're not bots; we're not AI; we're not computer-generated algorithms of music. We're cacophony. We're radical. We're unique and essential. And we're glad you're out there, listening.
