CHIRP Radio Best of 2015

Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2015. Our next list is from DJ and Assistant Features Director Amelia Hruby.

Currents by Tame Impala (Interscope)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Tame Impala CurrentsOne of the best breakup albums I've heard in a long time, and we all need a great breakup album some time or another.

To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar (Top Dawg / Aftermath / Interscope)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a ButterflyThis album made my list last year before it even came out, and it only exceeded my expectations. Nine months later, it's still a powerful, political and cultural phenomenon, and I have the utmost respect for Lamar's artistry.

This is the Sonics by The Sonics (Revox)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

The Sonics This is the SonicsThe Sonics put out their first new album in 49 years, and I was all about it. Garage tinged with R&B and suddenly it's 1966 again, and I'm totally okay with that.

No Cities to Love by Sleater-Kinney (Sub Pop)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Sleater Kinney No Cities to LoveSleater-Kinney's return to feminist punk after a decade of silence was the highlight of my January and seeing them live in the spring kept me going through winter. Such good stuff here!

Ivy Tripp by Waxahatchee (Merge)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Waxahatchee Ivy TrippI have to admit to having a girl crush on Katie Crutchfield and that probably influenced my decision to put this album on my top ten list, but it's also full of all the feels I have about trying to figure out how to grow up, and that's well worth a top ten spot.

Bad News Boys by King Khan & BBQ Show (In the Red)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

King Khan & BBQ Show Bad News BoysThis album came out in February, and the opening track is still my anthem. They treat everything from eternal loneliness to late-night snacks with the same jangly buoyancy, and we all need more of that in our lives.

Holding Hands with Jamie by Girl Band (Rough Trade)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Girl Band Holding Hands with JamieI'm not normally one for dissonance, but hearing someone scream Nutella over and over somehow seemed like an incredibly fitting critique of both capitalist consumer culture and people who take music too seriously. I was into it.

Varsity by Varsity (Jurassic Pop)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Varsity VarsityI, admittedly, listened to a lot of summery indie pop this year, but these locals topped my list. It's some kind of crunchy, candy treat that I can't stop consuming and can't recommend highly enough.

All Yours by Widowspeak (In the Red)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Widowspeak All YoursMore indie pop but it's autumnal this time. I keep spinning this one over and over again, letting Molly Hamilton's soothing voice rock me to sleep.

Rapid Rewards by Clearance (Tall Pat / Unsatisfied)
BUY: Reckless / Amazon

Clearance Rapid RewardsNot gonna lie, these guys sound a lot like Pavement. But I love Pavement, and I miss Pavement, and I'm totally okay with listening to people who make Pavement new for me again. Also Clearance is a couple of really nice guys making really rad music in Chicago. So maybe it's a B- on originality, but it's A+ for enjoyable, and I'm excited to see what they do next.

Other musical things I really loved this year include:

Janelle Monae's "Hell You Talmbout"

Meow the Jewels

Leif's Riot Boi

New music from Missy Elliott

The Elliott Smith documentary Heaven Adores You

Seeing Lizzo open for Sleater-Kinney

New singles from Angela James

Seeing Thee Oh Sees play in Paris
