2007 full-length from ex-HELMET & DON CABALLERO members. Based on those two bands alone, I bet you get a good idea of what this sounds like, but if you're not familiar, let me clue you in. JOHN STANIER (HELMET) is one of the best drummers ever. IAN WILLIAMS (DON CAB) is an amazing guitar player. Add two more members and you have BATTLES, a crazy math-rock explosion that's both hard and easy on the ears. While their songs are insanely complex, the output is really, really fun to listen to. Ranging from heavy to soft as a feather, these guys can do it all. RECOMMENDED!!!

"Space Mirror" is the 2nd full-length album from the Chicago guitarist (and IMPLODES member) Ken Camden. One look at the amazing cover, which features an officially licensed NASA photo, should cue you in to the journey you're about to take when you put this on. The album opens with the shortest track "Spectacle", a sort of twin to "Birthday", the opener on his first album but from there on out, Camden visits previously unexplored moons, planets, stars & nebulae. At times it's easy to forget that you're listening to a guitar as Camden twists knobs & alters frequencies like a mad scientist at work on his theoretical machines. We like to imagine each track as a soundtrack to a new appearance of the black monolith from 2001, arriving at mysterious locations throughout the universe over an incomprehensible amount of time. With nods towards Wendy Carlos, Fripp & Eno, POPOL VUH & TANGERINE DREAM, Ken Camden has provided the perfect soundtrack for your next trip into space.

Jaime Fennelly's MIND OVER MIRRORS project started off as a solo project & over the past few years he's collaborated with many Chicago musicians & this is his most elaborate version of the group yet. "Bellowing Sun" was commissioned by the MCA as an album/installation that involves a giant, sculpture that will rotate over the group while they perform the songs at the museum. Along with members of FREAKWATER, CALIFONE, IRON & WINE & DEATH BLUES & a recording by TORTOISE's John McEntire, Fennelly has created an incredible blend of acoustic & electronic instruments that pushes the boundaries of drone, trance & meditative music. Fans of 70's kosmische, 90's post-rock, Terry Riley etc... will approve. RECOMMENDED.
