First Time: First Burn - Erin Strick

Erin spends her days training and consulting, and her evenings baking and snuggling with her pets and husband. She hasn't been on the stage in a while, but enjoys a regular crooning of Rat Pack songs to unsuspecting bystanders. It's exciting for Erin to be performing again, but is curious what may be next for her...probably snuggling.

First Time: First Burn - Fury

FURY was born in Chicago Illinois. As a child she attended her grandfather’s church where she gained a very strong moral foundation as well as an appreciation of soulful music. Growing up she expressed her feelings through art and grew very fond of poetry and spoken word. Her biggest inspirations growing up were Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Eve, Left Eye and Talib Kweli. At the age of 13 she began to embrace the notion of becoming a rapper. Due to the loss of many loved ones she used writing to deal with the pain and loneliness we all deal with growing up. In high school she performed in several talent shows and began to gain more confidence as a rapper. At the age of 22 she became a mother and gained an even stronger drive to be a positive female role model. The music FURY writes is very intense and heart felt. She is very aware of the decline in positive messages in hip hop especially from female artists. She is inspired by music from all walks of life as long as it attempts to connect people and helps others to deal with life. She hopes to continue the legacy of the great female emcees who paved the way for her and motivate the emcees of the future.

First Time: First Fall: Joey Garfield

Joey Garfield is an award winning filmmaker, photographer, and artist. He grew up in Evanston and after landing a small speaking role in the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” knew he wanted to work in and around film so he moved to New York as a young adult to cut his teeth in that world.

While there Joey was entrenched in the Lower East Side art and comedy scene respectively. His sketch group The Bert Fershners helped to usher in the era of "Alternative Comedy"- a phrase that he still doesn't quite understand.

Also while in New York he was a PA on a ton of music videos like House Of Pain, Wu Tang Clan, and Cypress Hill. It was production hell, but Hip Hop heaven. During this time he got to be friendly with his idols, The Beastie Boys, and worked for their magazine Grand Royal.  They offered him the role of Octopus Monster in their music video Intergalactic.

Since then he has focused on directing his own stuff and has been fortunate enough to create work with folks he admires like Hannibal Buress, Run The Jewels, Kevin Hart, Reggie Watts, and Heidi Klum. You can see more at http://www.joeyjoeygarfield.com

First Time: First Fall - Meghan McDonough

Meghan has been a proud CHIRP Radio DJ and volunteer since 2012. She wrote “Trust Falls,” for Second City in 2017 and is currently working on being funnier in real life. During the day, Meghan is a Digital Content Producer for ABC7 Chicago. She also writes and web produces for Tom’s Guide and LaptopMag.com which indulges her nerdy love of technology. When she’s not writing, working or sleeping, she’s usually watching reruns of “The Golden Girls” or tending to the needs of her tennis ball-obsessed dog, Duke of Squirrel. Fun fact: One of Meghan’s defining traits is taking truly horrible photos when she meets someone famous.

Artist Interviews Fort Frances

Local band Fort Frances sits down with CHIRP DJ Julie Mueller in their West Loop rehearsal space for a light-hearted discussion on how they describe their sound, what the label "pop music" means to the band and the important contribution of Jeff's "bass face" to the group. Things turn philosophical in regards to how listeners currently digest music and how the band would be "f*#&cked" without a desire to make "popular music."

Fort Frances is currently in Maine finishing their upcoming record. You can catch Fort Frances at Lincoln Hall on December 12.
