Doug Martsch has been a musician since his brother taught him how to play guitar at age 14. The kind of man you want to see play acoustic guitar because you want to figure out how he does it, he sings tastefully and lovingly selected covers as well as his own originals. He brings his voice and vision to each show. Through all his years of music making, Doug Martsch has been dedicated to listening to all kinds of music and learning how to play the songs and styles that have changed his life. He is better known for playing in bands like Built to Spill, Halo Benders, and Treepeople. To hear him play an acoustic solo set is to understand where his love of music comes from and how he honors this love with his own creations.

Join Chirp At The Music Box Theatre for “Rock ā€˜Nā€™ Roll High School” Screening

Chirp 107.1 FM has partnered with the Chicago Film Society to present a brand new 35mm print screening of Rock ‘N’ Roll High School at the Music Box Theatre.

In a just world, the punk iconoclasts in the Ramones would have been offered as many starring vehicles as Elvis and the Beatles combined. Alas, we’re left with only a single, perfect example in Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, the Roger Corman-produced youthsploitation effort pitched for Cheap Trick but gloriously retrofitted for the brothers from Queens. Riff Randell (erstwhile scream queen P.J. Soles, solidifying cult icon status) is the biggest Ramones fan at Vince Lombardi High School, but her plan to liberate her dance-crazy classmates with tickets to see the band is put in danger when the dictatorial new school principal Evelyn Togar (underground darling Mary Woronov) declares a moratorium on rock ‘n’ roll. Like an issue of Mad Magazine come to life, Rock ‘n’ Roll High School never relents in its wall-to-wall silliness, a cyclone of bad puns, dopey site gags, and exploding mice capable of pummeling even the stoniest audience member into caws of ecstatic laughter. By the time the film crescendos with the Ramones blasting through five full live numbers in the span of time most movies would devote to two, you’ll also be ready to declare yourself a teenage lobotomy.

Oh Pep!— who are releasing their second full-length, I Wasn’t Only Thinking About You…(WHEN, ATO Records)— have always been as driven as they have been wildly creative. The duo met almost a decade ago, and it was fateful. While attending a performing arts high school in Melbourne, Australia, Pepita Emmerichs happened to walk down a hallway past guitarist Olivia Hally. The latter was about to sing a song and asked if Pepi would join her on stage. “When we started hanging out,” Olivia recalls, “we immediately started making music together.” Adds Pepita. “We both loved musicians like John Prine and Lucinda Williams, who hit you really hard with their incredibly honest work. Studying music, we both understood the importance in instruments and arrangement, but we were also really drawn to lyricists.”
