Jason Crock writesSaturday Looks Good to Me at Schubas on May 23!

CHIRP welcomes Saturday Looks Good to Me to their show at Schubas on Thursday, May 23. Since beginning as a basement recording project in 2000, the band has merged 1960s pop sounds with a range of styles and influences over four proper albums and various singles, compilations, and tour-only releases. Though the lineup of their live band has often changed, the constant remains songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Fred Thomas, the mastermind of the group through its many incarnations. The indie-pop band is returning from a four-year hiatus to tour behind a brand-new new album, One Kiss Ends it All, out on Polyvinyl Records this month.

The 21-and-over show begins at 9 PM, with Chicago’s own Like Pioneers (former Bound Stems) and Mister Suit as openers. Visit Schubas or CHIRP Events for more info.

Maddie Hannes writesCHIRP Night at the Whistler with Panoramic & True and Henry Joseph

There's no better way to easy back into the work week than drowning one's sorrows in Dehli Coolers and local music. Thank goodness for CHIRP Night at the Whistler, where CHIRP brings emerging and local bands to the Whistler's stage the second Monday of every month. Last Monday saw folk rockers Henry Joseph and indie-pop purveyors Panoramic & True entertain the crowd under the red lights of the Whistler's intimate stage. Check out some photos from the show, and clear your schedule for the next Whistler night on Monday, June 10.

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Bill Bruford Edition

What do Yes, King Crimson, Roy Harper, Savoy Brown and Genesis have in common? They all have, to varying degrees, employed Bill Bruford on drums, which is always a great decision. From the three gigs he played with Savoy Brown in 1968 to his three separate tours of duty with King Crimson, Bruford has brought the skills of a great jazz drummer and rock power to some of the most challenging rock music of the past four decades. While Bruford made his reputation as one of the great prog rock sidemen, he also lead his own projects, like Earthworks, constantly exploring and challenging himself as an instrumentalist. He never drew attention to himself, which might be why he was so effective in so many bands. Let’s pay tribute to Mr. Bruford by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.
