There was a time that Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook were mentioned in the same breath as Lennon and McCartney. Well, time hasn’t been quite that kind to the duo who penned so many great songs for Squeeze, but there’s no doubt that they penned some real gems over the years. Difford is reponsible for the lyrics on Squeeze classics like “Tempted”, “Pulling Mussels From a Shell”, “Up the Junction” and many others. He also would trot out his regular bloke croak for cool tunes like “Cool For Cats” and “Someone Else’s Heart”. He’s still going strong. Let’s pay tribute to Mr. Difford by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first ten songs that come up.

When I think of Stephen Morris, I think of the scene in the movie 24 Hour Party People, where producer Martin Hannett is berating Morris’s drumming, trying to mold him into a specific sound. Whether that scene is close the the truth, I do not know. What I do know, is that Morris’s drumming was a vital part of Joy Division’s sound, and then his steady beatkeeping kept people dancing to New Order tracks throughout the ’80s and beyond. In addition to a key role on so many great records, he married bandmate Gillian Gilbert. He has never been at the forefront of music, but that is often true of those who provide the backbeat. Let’s honor Morris on his birthday by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle, and sharing the first 10 tracks that come up.

Democracy Burlesque (where “Only the Politics are Naked!”) will take the stage tonight at Mary’s Attic in Andersonville with Hypocrisy Now!, their live-action takedown of the poseurs, preeners and pretenders who are trying to pass themselves off as our leaders.
