Dr. Drase & Michael Flavor Instant Classics - Wednesdays, 9PM
The enigmatic duo of Dustin “Dr.” Drase (not a doctor) and “Reverend” Michael Flavor (actually a reverend) began DJing together close to a decade ago, which makes them super pre-9/11. Their shared interest in the weird and kitschy corners of the musical world makes for an unexpected sonic excursion where you never quite know what you’re going to get. They are also a font of paradoxes and weird coincidences. Dustin loves Southeast Asian records from the 60s and 70s, yet has no interest in traveling there (or really anywhere, really). Michael is really tall, yet is part Filipino, and Dustin was immaculately conceived. Michael used to live on Talman Ave; Dustin has a cat named Talman. And they both have a shared soft spot for the Monkees. Members of CHIRP since day one, the pair have deep roots in Chicago, and have always shared an unhealthy obsession with the seedy undercurrent of bands populating the loft spaces, alleyways and basements throughout the city. In addition to their duties with CHIRP, Dr. Drase is one of the masterminds behind local labels Plustapes and Addenda Records and Rev. Flavor is currently playing guitar with the band Hidden Mitten.
If Mike could curate his ultimate live show, he would see Goo-era Sonic Youth, with openers Super AE-era Boredoms and local band Cave.
If Dustin could eliminate any three musicians/bands throughout history, he would erase the Counting Crows, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carrie Underwood. These people should pay for their crimes against humanity.
