AND NOTHING HURT
FATPOSSUM
On the last few SPIRITUALIZED albums, Jason Pierce has seemed almost weary of life. His view isn't negative though, more dazed or shocked by the ups & downs of just being alive. Those familiar with the recent albums "Sweet Heart Sweet Light" & "Songs in A&E" will recognize Pierce's affinity for gospel & 60's rock & roll with a noticeably simplistic almost nursery rhyme approach. Most of the tracking was done "long distance" with very few tracks made with the players in the same room. You'd never know it from listening though. SPIRITUALIZED is one of our favorite bands at the shops & this is another classic to add to the collection. RECOMMENDED!

LET IT COME DOWN
Fat Possum
SPIRITUALIZED existed as a proper band for a few years but the exhaustive touring cycle for "Ladies & Gentlemen..." led to their break up. For the next SPIRITUALIZED album, Jason Pierce gathered over 100 different musicians (!!) to make this epic 2011 album. Inspired by Phil Spector's Wall of Sound production style, "Let It Come Down" is a massive sounding album & also a good indicator to sounds he'd be exploring on the next few albums. Like the previous Fat Possum reissues, this one features updated cover art. RECOMMENDED!

J. Spaceman is back! After taking the past 4 years off to restaff & hopefully cheer up a bit, SPIRITUALIZED is once again here to bring a little soul into our humdrum lives. This being the 4th album since disbanding from SPACEMEN 3, Mr. Spaceman has created an 11 track album that leaves the listener wanting more, but feeling quite satisfied with what is actually there. Not as sad or depressing as LADIES & GENTLEMAN..., this album starts off right away with some spacerock jams in the vein of ELECTRICTY. But don't worry my heavy-hearted friends, there are still plenty of heavenly love songs to ease any pain or suffering that you might be going through. In addition to all of these new feelgood gems, the album also ends with a SPACEMAN 3 cover of "Lord Can You Hear Me" which is a tad bit dreamier than the cover LOW performed a few years back on the SPACEMAN 3 tribute record. But regardless, if you dig all of the other SPIRITUALIZED albums, than rest assured that this new one is just as gospelicious as the previous.

SONGS IN A&E
SANCTUARY
Post SPACEMAN 3, and post illness, J. SPACEMAN and company are back with their sixth studio release. Somewhere between church hymnals, space sounds, and cacophonous MY BLOODY VALENTINE-esque rock is where you can find "Songs In A & E." What also should be noted is that lead vocalist JASON PIERCE was given an offer to create the score for a new HARMONY KORINE (director of "Gummo" and "Kids") film entitled "Mr. Lonely" along side experimental trio SUN CITY GIRLS. PIERCE is quite the busy lad these days, and there is no weak spots in either project. "Songs..." is definately worth your time, and forms an ecclectic mixture of spaced out tunes, and tender melodies.

SWEET HEART SWEET LIGHT
FATPOSSUM
Since 2008's much lauded album "Songs in A&E" Jason Pierce has battled & supposedly conquered a serious liver disease. The experience seems to have effected Pierce greatly as the lyrics seem more reflective without seeming desperate. We all know Pierce is no angel & he's certainly pushed his mind & body to the edge since we've gotten to know him way back with SPACEMEN 3 but we have to say he does seem thankful to be healthy & able to make music. This might be the closest sounding record to the classic "Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" with Pierce's fragile voice surrounded by walls of guitar noise & orchestral arrangements. On the closer "So Long You Pretty Thing", Pierce is obviously paying homage to 70's glam & pop & how the world has moved on from there but he also seems to be looking forward by saying that it's o.k. that we've moved on, full-steam ahead.

EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL
Fat Possum
The 2022 SPIRITUALIZED album starts off with a woman's voice speaking the album title & the artwork is a play on a box of pills. Sound familiar? It should because Jason Pierce's now legendary "Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" also featured those two characteristics. One big difference on this one is the massive amount of musicians that participate, which sits about about 30. The last few albums have felt a little more "inward" but this one is BIG, with dense orchestrated & joyous explosions of notes. Jason Pierce is one of our favorite artists ever so anything new by the man is very welcome here. RECOMMENDED.

Fat Possum
The early 90s space rock classic from Jason Pierce & SPIRITUALIZED is available once again this time on Fat Possum with updated cover art. Pierce's former band SPACEMEN 3 was slowly moving in a more "pop" direction & he solidified that move on the SPIRITUALIZED debut which was a mix of Brit Pop, psychedelic revival & space rock. This album has aged so damn well & it's great to be able to stock it in the racks once again. RECOMMENDED!
