Limited 4-track CD from Louisville's Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & PHANTOM FAMILY HALO. The CD is really a collection of P.F.H. songs with Will Oldham on vocals so this really stands out from the stuff he's been doing solo & with the Cairo Gang. P.F.H. vocalist & mastermind Dominic Cipolla shares singing duties with Oldham & the result is a nice collection of acoustic based folk songs with a psychedelic edge. Side two starts out with a Crazy Horse esque rock jam that is the closest to PHANTOM FAMILY HALO's live sound that you'll hear on the CD.

Will Oldham aka Palace/ Bonnie Prince Billy's new full length is much more of a return to his downhome backporch country folk tinged pop that we've all grown used to. Despite an experimental straying over the last few years, this new release, with the aid of PAPA M's Dave Pajo, is a complete return to the simple PalaceGospel that shines in meloncholy and Americana greatness.

Since the release of "The Letting Go", Will Oldham has released a live album, a collection of demos & an e.p. of covers but technically "Lie Down in the Light" is the next 'official' album. The album consists of mostly uplifting songs that are firmly rooted in American folk tradition. Many of the songs prominently feature Ashley Webber on lead vocal & on harmonies on most songs with Oldham. Her voice is similar to Sandy Denny's which definitely makes this the most late 60's British folk sounding Will Oldham release to date. Neil Young's "Comes a Time" album comes to mind at certain times as well. Another insanely solid album from Will Oldham.

Collaborative release between the horse-faced one, Will Oldham a.k.a BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY & one of indie rock's most nervous dudes, MATT SWEENEY (ex-CHAVEZ, ZWAN). Mr. Sweeney provides the music & Mr. Oldham provides the lyrics and the result is a very listenable blend of southern-fried-mope-rock. This record leans more towards the early PALACE BROS. material than the later & Matt Sweeney's poppier song structures & tasty harmonies provide a nice change of pace, bringing almost a PAPA M feel to this record. It's nice to see that the ZWAN monster didn't swallow Sweeney alive.

Single from BPB's LETTING GO record. It's got a very PALACE feel to it (by that I mean much more playful as opposed to BONNIE's more somber stylings) & on top of that it's got brother PAUL along with guests MATT SWEENY (Superwolf) & BEN CHASNY (Six Organs).

After a few years of making music in collaboration with old buddies BILL CALLAHAN and MATT SWEENEY (plus new buddy MDOU MOCTAR), WILL OLDHAM returns again to the graceful solitude of his long-running BONNIE "PRINCE" BILLY project. His craggy voice & whimsical lyrics are first rate as always, wrapped up tightly in spare Americana & chamber pop stylings that suit him like a homespun knit sweater. He's backed here by a disarmingly skilled group of musicians, with strings & sax & the gorgeous harmonies of vocalist Dane Waters, who give intention to every single note in service of Oldham's dizzying melodies. We're already looking forward to returning to this one over and over again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

These are definitely rough takes of the songs, you can even hear the tape hiss (or the machine itself running.) If you're even remotely interested in the process of making records or just a fan of "The Letting Go" then you should really pick this up.
