Since the release of the excellent 2016 album "Open to Chance", Kayla Cohen transplanted from L.A. to a small adobe house in New Mexico for two seasons to write "Spring." Having just spent some time in Santa Fe & Albuquerque myself, I can very much understand the draw of writing & recording in that magical place. There's a certain slowness to everything there, almost like everyone understands that you need to take some time out to appreciate the landscape that is beautiful as it is harsh & amazing sunsets that are so difficult to describe. Cohen seems to have absorbed those New Mexico qualities as the songs seem to be in no hurry to present themselves, they just are what they are, simple & pure. With some help from a number of current & ex Chicagoans including Cooper of CAVE/BITCHIN' BAJAS, Jim Elkington on string arrangements & Mark Riordan on piano amongst others, Kayla Cohen has created a masterpiece. RECOMMENDED.

This is the AIMEE MANN album her label rejected for being "not commercial enough" (the dopes) but now that she's put it out herself, you can hear for yourself. Turns out, they were wrong. The usual suspects are all here - the quirky lyrics, the hum- mable melodies, the jangly yet insistent guitar: a beautiful album that fills out an already-excellent body of work. Electronic bursts, Depeche Mode-like vocals, dark ballads, and even some chamber elements make up Patrick Wolf's fourth album immaculately described as being [a] "nightmarish cradle of apocalyptic techno-chicanery." Brooding, yes. Theatrical, yes. Over the top, possibly. BUT so are some of the groups Wolf is seemingly influenced by or referencing like Depeche Mode, Antony & the Johnsons, and even Nine Inch Nails. On the Nylon Records imprint.

"Long Lost Solace Find" is the debut solo album by Mike Polizze of PURLING HISS & BIRDS OF MAYA. With help from buds like Kurt Vile & WAR ON DRUGS engineer Jeff Zeigler, Polizze has now made his own classic Philly record. There's no way you can listen to a song like "Cheewawa" & not hum the melody to yourself for the rest of the day. Mellow acoustic rock that will appeal to KV, WAR ON DRUGS, Steve Gunn, AFGHAN WHIGS, & THE CHURCH will dig this. RECOMMENDED.
