CHIRP Radio’s Storytelling and Music series, The First Time, is unlike any storytelling show in Chicago. It pairs our readers' personal stories about a First Time experience with a song performance.
On Saturday, June 10th at 4:15 p.m, CHIRP Radio is delighted to produce an ALL STAR version of this series specifically for the Printer’s Row Lit Fest. Scheduled readers include writer Joe Meno and former drummer for the band Blake Babies and current food blogger, Freda Love Smith and writer Britt Julious.
This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by our house band, The First Time Four band. The band, includes Gerald Dowd, Steve Frisbie, Liam Davis and Scott Stevenson, and has played with musicians including Robbie Fulks, Ian Hunter, Kelly Hogan, Nora O'Connor and more. They take special care to perform unexpected song arrangements of said covers.
The regular show is a quarterly benefit for CHIRPRadio.org at Martyrs’ on the city’s northside. Hosted by The Moth champion Jenn Sodini, past readers featured in this quarterly series include Shannon Cason, Bill Ayers, Dan Ponce, Len Kasper, Tony Fitzpatrick, JC Brooks and Ji Suk Yi. The upcoming First Time show at Martyrs’ is Wednesday, July 12th with the theme First Catch.
