CHIRP is proud to sponsor the Chicago Humanities Festival’s event “Questlove: Creative Quest.”  Questlove—the Grammy Award-winning cofounder of The Roots and musical director for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon—is a creative powerhouse: musician, bandleader, designer, culinary entrepreneur, professor, and all-around cultural omnivore and tastemaker. Now he comes to CHF with a new mission: Creative Quest, an impassioned guide to living your best creative life, from finding a mentor to maintaining a creative network to coping with critics. In a candid and wide-ranging conversation with Ben Greenman (co-author, Mo' Meta Blues), Questlove will share his wisdom on inspiration and originality, and some of his own experiences, including life lessons from musical forefathers (George Clinton), collaborators (D’Angelo), and like-minded artists (Ava DuVernay and Björk).

Classic Album Sundays is a group album listening experience that builds a community of music lovers and CHIRP is proud to co-sponsor the series in Chicago. Join us during March as we will feature The Wailers' "Burnin'."

Things moved fast in the music business of 1973. Less than six months after the Wailers released their first international album, Catch A Fire on 4 May, the conflagration continued with the release of Burnin’ on 19 October. Still billed only as the Wailers, and still led by the three-man vocal front line of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, the band was now moving through the gears with an increasing sense of mission.

CHIRP is proud to sponsor the Chicago Humanities Festival’s event “Hanif Abdurraqib: They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us.” Poet, writer, and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib uses his distinctly ruminative voice and deep investment in popular culture and music to dissect the everyday threats to the lives of black Americans. In They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us, inspired by the music of Ice Cube, Abdurraqib ranges over a cross-section of experiences, from attending a Bruce Springsteen concert the day after visiting Michael Brown’s grave in Ferguson to the first time he was ordered to the ground by police officers—for attempting to enter his own car. Chicago poet and author of Wild Hundreds, Nate Marshall joins Abdurraqib for what's sure to be an dynamic if sobering conversation.

Join CHIRP Radio as we Welcome The Cactus Blossoms to Lincoln Hall on Sunday, April 29th!
The Cactus Blossoms sound uncannily like a sibling harmony act that just stepped off the stage of the Grand Ol' Opry or the Lousiana Hayride in the '40's or '50s, and there's a good reason for that -- guitarists and singers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey are brothers, and their voices fit together in a way that suggests a modern day approximation of what the Everly Brothers and the Louvin Brothers could deliver.

CHIRP is happy to welcome Sam Amidon to the Old Town School of Folk Music with special guest James Elkington.

The Following Mountain is the newest solo album by experimental folk artist, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon. Created with producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Regina Spektor) and Amidon's frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily, it represents a new approach for Amidon, who shifts here from his previous norm of re-working traditional folk songs and presents nine wholly original compositions, with some lyrics drawing on traditional sources. The album features a rare guest appearance by drummer Milford Graves, known initially for his work in the 1960s with free jazz legends Albert Ayler and Sonny Sharrock.

“The Following Mountain is a walk through the thickets of the imagination,” Amidon said, “… a personal mythology of sounds and visions and characters. It is my first album of original music, but is still linked to the Appalachian music I love, as well as improvisation, beats, Don Cherry, Vermont, London."

“On Wintres Woma, guitarist James Elkington reemerges at age 46 as an acoustic fingerpicking hero with a proper solo debut—an album that is at once beautiful, complex, and assured. Where plenty of guitarists have rediscovered themselves in the transition from electric bands to acoustic-minded singledom, such as Pelt's Jack Rose and Cul de Sac's Glenn Jones, Elkington stands apart among the wave of 21st century guitar soloists.” – Pitchfork
