Classic Album Sundays is a group album listening experience that builds a community of music lovers and CHIRP is proud to co-sponsor the series in Chicago. Join us during July as we will feature Sigur Rós's Ágætis byrjun.

A bold statement on their website at the time of Ágætis byrjun’s release gave a direct insight into Sigur Ros’ mind at the time. To call then “post-rock” would be an insult; piano, flutes, tremolo, horns, feedback, and inhuman sounding vocal performances create a sound that cannot really be defined by time or genre.

Chirp 107.1 FM has partnered with the Chicago Film Society to present a rare screening of Urgh! A Music War on 35MM film at the Music Box Theatre.

Pop quiz: who is the best new band of the 1980s? Gang of Four? Steel Pulse? The Go-Go’s? Surf Punks?

Whatever your taste in under-the-radar sounds, Urgh! A Music War has you covered. Unabashed propaganda for the new wave of rock ‘n’ roll on the rise at the head of the Reagan era and soft promotion for “Creative Consultant” Miles Copeland’s I.R.S. Records (to which several bands featured in the film were signed), Urgh! captured, on 35mm and with multichannel sound, some of the most exciting musical acts of its era live in early, prime form.

Keeping interstitial material to a minimum, Urgh! provided each of its 24 bands the space of a single song to leave an indelible impression before moving along. Showcasing in equal measure bands that were both on the precipice of breaking through as well as those who broke up or fell off the map almost immediately (anybody heard from The Alley Cats lately?), Urgh! has endured as a vital time capsule of its musical moment, presented in hi-fi with relatively little corporate intervention (save for the Dead Kennedys being booted from the soundtrack release for their inflammatory name).

So please join us as we present, on the big screen (deep breath!), Devo, Echo & the Bunnymen, X, 999, Klaus Nomi, Au Pairs, Oingo Boingo, UB40, The Cramps, Gary Numan, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, XTC, and many more in the musical event of 1981.

CHIRP Music Book Club: How Music Works by David Byrne

RSVP to this event

Roscoe Books
2142 W Roscoe St.
Chicago
(773) 857-2676

Join CHIRP on Thursday, September 13th for the next installment of our bi-monthly book group, covering How Music Works by David Byrne.

"Most people know idiosyncratic, Scottish-born David Byrne as the front man of that great new wave band, Talking Heads. But he is also an author, painter, photographer, and film and record producer. In this wide-ranging celebration of the power of music, he discusses, among many topics, the early days of the recording industry, various types of music venues, birdsong and whale calls, the significance of mixtapes, the development of CDs, his love of African rhythms, and the concept of creativity and what it means to be creative. But he also mentions his own career as well as the many collaborators he has worked with, including English musician and producer Brian Eno, Brazilian composer and singer Caetano Veloso, and DJ Fatboy Slim. He describes the origin of his twitchy stage persona and acknowledges his own shyness, describing himself as “a withdrawn introvert,” whose most comfortable way of communicating was, he says, onstage. (“Poor Susan Boyle; I can identify,” he writes). At one point, he even self-diagnoses himself as having a mild form of Asperger’s syndrome. He concludes by asking provocative questions: What is music good for? Why do we need music? “Funding future creativity is a worthy investment,” he insists. Endlessly fascinating, insightful, and intelligent." --June Sawyers, Booklist

We'll meet at 7pm for a lively discussion with music & snacks.  For more information on upcoming books and meetings, visit roscoebooks.com
