<< Update, I am now a live DJ on chirpradio.org. Catch my show, "The Cavalier Klaxon," Monday mornings from 6-9am CST >>
I began volunteering for CHIRP in 2011, but took an extended sabbatical in 2012 while living / working in Minnesota. I moved back in late November of that year and have been an active volunteer ever since.
As far as who I am, I guess you could say that I'm a man of many parts. My interest in independent music culture really took off in college and had as much to do with the circle of folks I hung around with as it did with my appreciation of music. But my interest grew and I even joined the college radio station (WVKR 91.3 FM Poughkeepsie, NY), serving for three semesters as a DJ and one semester as the Technology Director (a nightmare of a job I have no interest in repeating).
Since college I have written music journalism for a variety of online sources as well as Newcity magazine. I go to a lot of shows and have a number of friends who are active in the local music scene. I live a stone's throw from Permanent Records and if I had any income at the moment, I would be picking up vinyl there on the regs.
As it is, I'm currently preparing to go back to school after having worked for about a year and a half with an organization that does progressive public outreach and fundraising. Working for progressive causes has convinced me that the only way to make true change in the world, is to reconfigure incentives for individual and collective action. So I'll be studying Economics.
I want to work with CHIRP because I believe in everything alternative and anything that moves away from the soul-crushing homogeneity of corporate culture production. Non-commercial media is as solid a beacon of hope for the future of our culture as I can imagine.
