CHIRP Radio Best of 2014

Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2014. Our next list is from volunteer Luke C.

To Be Kind by Swans (Young God)
Swans To Be KindBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

My first Swans record. I've since listened to their whole discography, but TBK is still one of my favorites.

true that by Michael Cera (self-released)
Michael Cera true thatBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Wonderful little low-fi release. It's just as awkward and adorable as you'd expect from him.

The Moon Rang Like a Bell by Hundred Waters (OWSLA)
Hundred Waters The Moon Rang Like a BellBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

An almost perfect album in my eyes. No idea what to call it. Electronic? Indie rock? Folk? Maybe some combination. Whatever it is, it's fantastic. Probably my AOTY.

Terrestrials by Sunn O))) and Ulver (Southern Lord)
Sunn O))) and Ulver TerrestrialsBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Lighter than most Sunn O)))'s previous records, but still a great album. More meditative and ambient than dark and brutal.

Under Color of Official Right by Protomartyr (Hardly Art)
Protomartyr Under Color of Official RightBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Fantastic post-punk all around.

Theleme by Theleme (self-released)
Theleme ThelemeBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

One of my most listened to records this year, and one that I just happened to find on Bandcamp. Absolutely phenomenal space rock krautrock sort of thing from a French band.

Ensemble by Death Blues (Rhythmplex)
Death Blues EnsembleBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Experimental, modern classical, post-rock, doesn't matter what you call it. It's beautiful music.

LIVE by Dim Lighting (self-released)
Dim Lighting LIVEBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Really really great improvisational jazz record from a trio of local guys. The guitarist also happens to be a friend of mine, so maybe I'm a tiny bit biased, but you should still give it a listen.

Passenger Peru by Passenger Peru (Fleeting Youth)
Passenger Peru Passenger PeruBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

A sort of alternative garage rock psychedelic something or other that never fails to make me smile. It just feels good.

Ruins by Grouper (kranky)
Grouper RuinsBUY: Reckless / Permanent / iTunes / Insound / Amazon

Another great release from Liz. Beautiful haunting hazy piano. Gives me chills even after quite a few listens.

Some other good ones were Sun Kil Moon, Xiu Xiu, Damien Jurado, Clark, Flying Lotus, Perfume Genius, Dirty River, Ought, Champ, Carla Bozulich, A Silver Mount Zion... it was a good year for music.
