Eddie writesOn Tape: Veruca Salt at Wicker Park Fest (July 26, 2015)

Written by Eddie Sayago

September 29, 2017:

As the street festival season concludes with all the Oktoberfests going on across the city, so concludes the era of watching live music outside while drinking and eating and jumping up and down on a soon-to-be potholed street. I for one am glad festival season is over.

Wicker Park Fest is one of many festivals I have tried to enjoy over the years, but once you pay the “suggested donation,” fork over eight bucks for beer, get bumped into by one of numerous bros in those rompers who greet one another and begin every other sentence with “brah!” (followed by a pause that is a tad bit too long), and maybe get pickpocketed or bump into some casual acquaintance whose name you can’t remember and they insist you hang out with them and their obnoxious summer fling they will call “bae” because maybe they don’t know his name, the appeal of drinking on the street has lost its luster.

Also, it’s hot, And why are there kids here?! (Isn’t that what those summer camps are for?)

Sophie Holtzmann writesOn Tape: Cap’n Jazz Live at the Wil-Mar Center, Madison, WI (1994)

Video courtesy of: Jose C. Slater / Words by Sophie Holtzmann

Usually I’m hesitant to re-watch clips of live shows, because you can’t help but feel you’re missing out on the special collective effervescence live music provides. But I make an exception, and a recommendation, for this early Cap’n Jazz performance of “Oh Messy Life”.

Cap’n Jazz, a home-grown Chicago band, is really everything we love about the Chicago music scene. There’s a certain something approachable and thrown together about the group, with music that matches. There’s no better case study in this than in this show captured from the band’s early days while playing in Madison, Wisconsin. Armored in old t-shirts and pants that look like they’ve seen a better decade, the (at the time) 5-piece band lays down one of my personally favorite renditions of “Oh Messy Life.”

Tyler Clark presents: Local Mythologies writesOn Tape: An Evening with Nat King Cole (1963)

Welcome to On Tape, CHIRP's weekly exploration of Chicago music in films, videos, and beyond. Each week, our editors will reach back into the archives for the interviews, music videos, live concert appearances, and found footage of the city's most important musical icons. This week: Nat King Cole.

I remember the first love song that I ever loved. I was in grade school, and my grandmother had just picked me up from school in her then-new 1991 Dodge Dynasty. Unlike her old, boat-like Toronado, the new car was smaller, more fuel-efficient. It also had a cassette player, which, on this day, contained one of the only tapes that my grandmother ever purchased: a greatest-hits compilation of Nat King Cole. My grandmother loved Nat King Cole; for years after this, even as her hearing and vision started to go, it wasn't uncommon to hear the opening strains of "Unforgettable" (then played on a CD player that she could navigate by touch) slipping through the crack in her door while she got ready for the day. However, that was all still to come.
