Big Rob writesBig Rob Kerr Goes to Mamby on the Beach: Day 1

written by Big Rob Kerr

From the Red Line:

Empire of the Sun or Zhu was the biggest question of the first day at the first Mamby on the Beach festival on Oakwood Beach on Chicago's south shore.

There was a definite feeling out period needed upon arrival to Chicago's newest beach fest. Young camera-ready bodies eager to be viewed were mixed in with the venerable house music lovers which made for a great new party environment Saturday evening. Anxious excitement became dancers bliss when Felix da Housecat took over at 5 in The Tent stage.

Mamby's big day one question was answered for me as Empire of the Sun ended the night and had me melted to the same dance spot that Röyksopp had me melted to directly before them. Every track from their album Ice on the Dune hit the crowd sonically as well as visually.

Conflict is present as always with these events as I loved the second half of Saturday's lineup of entertainment immensely, but I must say I am concerned about the elitism apparent at this Mamby on the Beach. The biggest example of this being that general admission ticket patrons could buy only beers and sangria, no hard liqueur for the masses.

Mamby provided all in attendance a fantastic chance to see artistic dance music presented on a grand stage but it was troubling to see organizers divide it's attendees. A+ for the talent but a B+ for the production. That said, I cannot wait for day two.

With Love,

Big Rob at the Beach

Day 3

The forecast called for rain, and we were prepared with ponchos and what I call “my gross festival boots” (thanks, Riot Fest 2014!). We decided to keep it simple on Friday and planned to spend the whole day at the Spin Magazine showcase at legendary BBQ joint/music venue, Stubbs.

Post-punk (& recently controversial) rockers Viet Cong kicked off the event by asking the audience who else was hungover and exhausted. After a unanimous YES by screamed by nearly everyone, they played as if their lives depended on it, which was extremely impressive considering their drummer played with a broken hand.

Day 2

After a huge breakfast at Magnolia Cafe (more breakfast tacos because #yolo), it was time for Day 2. I started the day off solo with a goal of getting back to Red 7 but allowed myself to be distracted by whatever sounded cool.

That first distraction was Slow Down Molasses at the Canadian showcase. Described as “the Broken Social Scene of the prairies,” I immediately dug their indie sound and lady vocalist.

Setting back out to my original destination, I was invited in to The Lolo’s, a Californian band with an Americana indie sound. Up next was The Black and White at a random tent off of Red River Road, playing me an 80’s reminiscent set that would make HAIM proud.

While three times the charm is a tired and trite phrase, it is also an adequate description of my experience last week in Austin. After a two year hiatus, last Wednesday I hopped on a plane to Austin for my third SXSW. A lot happened in those two years, but most obvious (and most accidentally) was the fact that I had distanced myself from independent music. I got tired. I felt like I couldn’t keep up. I stopped going to shows because I was sick of crowds and drunk people who talked loudly during quiet moments. I got frustrated when I could seemingly only watch shows through the lens of someone else’s iPhone. I wondered, is this what getting older feels like?

Bobby Evers writesAn Open Letter To The Heckler At The St. Vincent Show

Hey buddy. Look, I’m so sorry to interrupt you. That was not my intention at all. I just wanted to draw your attention to the fact that you are actually in a public space right now, and not your living room. We all are. All of us put in a similar amount of effort as you to buy tickets, show up on time, and all face the same direction sort of for the same reason as you. And that is to see Annie Clark do a St. Vincent show. And I totally get it; the amount of time she is spending making banter with the audience (which they call “crowd work (that is to say it happens often enough that all of the people who do it have an industry term for this, for talking between songs, to engage the crowd in this manner)) is time that is taken away from playing “the hits.”

But buddy, ya gotta wait til the show’s over to complain. I know, I know, sweety, it’s OK. It is boring to hear talking instead of music, you’re right, but imagine how all of us feel right now, hearing you talking instead of Annie Clark.
